Blue Ridge Regional Hospital participates in the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP)
We understand that surgery represents potential risks and complications. To give you better peace-of-mind and confidence, Blue Ridge Regional Hospital joined a national partnership called Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP), which exists to help prevent post-surgical complications. Partnership in SCIP represents a commitment to best practices so that our patients experience fewer infections, fewer adverse cardiac events and a reduced rate of complications.

Surgery Department Team
The Surgery Department uses a team approach, which includes consulting with your primary care physician so that all your medical services are coordinated. The surgeons and anesthesiologists employed by Blue Ridge Regional Hospital are board certified in their area of specialization and our nurses are ACLS certified (Advanced Cardiac Life Support).

Staff members from the Social Services Department are also an important part of the surgery team. They’re available to talk to you during your inpatient stay, and their discharge planning puts you on the road to recovery by connecting you with physical therapy and rehabilitation, home-based services and wound care. Our partners in post-surgical care include Blue Ridge Fitness and Rehabilitation, Blue Ridge Home Care and Blue Ridge Regional Hospital Wound Care

Preparing for Surgery
Your physician will answer all your questions and provide detailed information about how to prepare for surgery. However, here are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

  1. Learn as much as you can about your surgery. Your physician welcomes questions you might have about why you need surgery, how the procedure is performed and anesthesia.
  2. Don’t hesitate to ask about obtaining a second opinion. We want you to be confident that we are providing the best care possible.
  3. Everyone feels anxious about surgery, but if you experience excessive fears, be sure to talk to your doctor because there are relaxation techniques and other treatments available to help.
